imsu embark on indefinite strike

Lecturers at the Nasarawa State
University, Keffi (NSUK), have
embarked on an indefinite strike over allowances owed
them by the management of the
institution.
According to the Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), NSUK
chapter, Dr. Theophilus Daniel-Lagi, who made the statement on Monday while addressing newsmen at the end of an emergency meeting, members of
the union are directed to boycott academic duties until they are directed to do so otherwise.
He said: “We have reached a point of no return. We are hereby directing our members to
proceed on indefinite strike immediately.
We are not coming back to work until our demands are
met. “They include general funding of the university,
review of the university law to conform to the 2003 act as obtained in other public universities. “Others are ambiguous promotion guideline, tax relief for members and the component of the Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) that accrued since 2009, among others issues in contention.” Daniel-Lagi frowned at the inability of the state government to address their demands after the intervention by the state House of Assembly and
other stakeholders to avert the industrial action.
He described the strike as “unfortunate”, adding that some of the intervention projects in the university by TETFUND were as result of the efforts
made by the union.
He solicited the cooperation and understanding of its members and the public toward the strike,
saying that it was in the interest of the institution and education in the state. Reacting to the strike, the Vice Chancellor of the
University, Prof. Mohammed Akaro-Mainoma, appealed to the union to reconsider its stand in the
interest of peace and the development of the
education sector. (NAN)
