AAUA VC Charges Students to Uphold Varsity’s Values, Shun Electoral Violence

The Vice Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University,Akungba Akoko, Ondo State,Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun, has advised students of the
institution to uphold AAUA’s tenets and values of excellence and integrity, and to avoid being used as willing tools in the hands of those he called desperate politicians in the
coming gubernatorial election in
the state.

The Professor of Agriculture Economics gave the advice at
an interactive meeting he held
with the leadership of the Students Union of the Institution.

He called on them to focus on
their primary reason for being in
school in order to join the growing ranks of their colleagues who have won laurels by being outstanding in
national examinations and who
are flying high the flag of AAUA
in their respective careers.

Prof Ajibefun, who used the meeting to explain recent development in the institution, assured them that Management would always prioritise their welfare, saying the students
remain the primary reason academic and non-academic staff exist in the school.

He said, “Let me assure you that Management will continue to interact with you as the need
arises to shed light on various
issues and clear misconceptions that may arise.

“Let me also commend you for
providing good leadership for the thousands of our students and for proving to them that student unionism could successfully be done without being violent, cantankerous or confrontational.

The Varsity boss commended
the students’ leadership for doing their utmost in preventing the last student riot from escalating, even as he said Management did its best to nip in the bud the last strike action
by academic staff to no avail.

He also took time out to explain
the circumstances that led to the recent suspension of some academic staff saying the disciplinary measures were not
aimed at gagging the local chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) as insinuated in some social media postings, saying it is a routine administrative punitive measure aimed at disciplining some
unruly lecturers who went round
the campus disrupting normal
academic work and verbally and
physically assaulting some of
their senior colleagues who were going about their lawful duties.

He cautioned, “Do not listen to
rumours and postings on the social media saying management is fighting ASUU.

That is far from the truth.
Management only acted the way it should when some HoDs and Deans wrote to the Vice Chancellor alleging physical and verbal assault from a group of academic staff while performing their lawful duties.

And since the Office of the Vice
Chancellor is the custodian of
the university laws, the onus is
therefore on me to defend them
by upholding the laws.”

In their responses, the students
pleaded with the Management
to pardon the suspended for
embarrassing the Vice Chancellor and other members of Management in the boys’hostel last session, saying that the erring students would have learnt their lessons by now and that Management, as carry parents, should take them back.
They also called on Management and the academic staff to sheathe their swords and work together in harmony to ensure a stable academic calendar and a favourable index rating.

Responding, Prof Ajibefun said
Management would look into
the issues raised. He said when
the panel looking into the violent conduct protest that led
to the suspension of the
students submits its report,
Management would do the
needful.

Prof Ajibefun assured them that
Management would always be
attentive to their needs and that
no stone would be left unturned
in the quest to make their stay
in the institution memorable
and make the academic
environment conducive for
learning and research.

Also at the meeting the Deputy
Vice Chancellor (Academic),
Prof. Oluyemisi Adebowale; the
Bursar, Mrs Olubunmi Ologun;
the Librarian, Dr. Rotimi
Egunjobi; and the Dean of
Student Affairs, Dr Bolanle
Ogungbamila, among other
senior officers of the
institution.

The Student Union leadership
were led by its Chairman, Com.
Odunyemi Adegbola; his Vice,
Com. Rita Ayeni; and the
Secretary, Com. Segun
Odunayo.
