Poly Students And The Police Clash Over School Rules

The students of the Eruwa Polytechnic, Eruwa, Oyo state had a face-off with police at the headquarters ofIbarapa East Local Government following the students’ protest against the management of the school, on Tuesday.
A campus source revealed that the protest was due the dismissal of students of Higher National Diploma(HND) Business Administration and hike in fees charged for late registration by the management.
To bring the protest under control, the school management called in members of the state police force in the town to restore peace.
The source also said, “the affected HND one students of Business Administration were told to go home after being admitted, paid their school fees and had even been receiving lectures. The school now said they cannot admit them again, telling them to go home and come back next session.”
The source hinted that the school management hinged their excuse on the fact that the affected  students studied Public Administration for their National Diploma (ND) courses.
It added that the students insisted that the management gave them go ahead to apply for Business Administration for their HND programme which they complied.
On this premise, according to our source, the students were admitted but were surprised when the management made a U-turn and sent them packing through a notice on the board.
The second reason for their protest centred on payment of late registration fees for both the Daily Part Time (DPP) and full time students.
It was gathered that the students were appealing to the management on the basis that most of their parents who work as civil servants under the state government are being owed several months of salary.
The clash between the policemen and students led to a student being shot and three others were hospitalized.

Onofiok LukeThe pioneer Senate President of University of Uyo Student Union Government Senator Emediong Uwemedimoh Ibanga has been offered automatic employment on graduation, this is courtesy of the Speaker of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Barr. Onofiok Luke.
The Speaker made the pronouncement when the Senate President led his colleagues to observe plenary with legislators of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly on Tuesday 22nd March , and was thereafter granted audience on courtesy call to the Speaker to brief him on their planned Parliamentary Week coming up in May.
In response, Barrister Luke who was high on emotion, confessed that his dream has come true, the dream of a new generation of credible leaders in the student cadre. He said the offer of employment is coming on the heels of the demeanor, intelligence and eloquence in use of grammar from the parliamentary glossary by the Student’s Senate President.
The Speaker commended the entire senate for conducting themselves well, admonishing them to see their current office in school as a platform to prepare them for leadership positions in the outer world.  He also seized the opportunity to enlighten them on Akwa Ibom Internship Scheme which is the first in the country.
In emphasizing his support, he said ‘I will be a hypocrite if I don’t do to the student community what I expected from elders outside the school community while I was the President of the Students Union, so be guaranteed of my support’.
While eulogizing the personality of the school head, the speaker encouraged the students parliament to ensure a good working relationship with the current Vice Chancellor Professor Enefiok Essien, describing him as a noble man with integrity. He urged the students not be distracted by unionism enough to neglect their academics, which is the primary reason for being in school.

University Staff Kidnapped, Abductors Demands N5m

uiiKidnappers have reportedly abducted a member of staff of the University of Ibadan (UI), Dr Beatrice Fabunmi, on Friday, March 25,  in Ondo State at Oba-Akoko on her way to visit her mother in Ibilo, Edo State.
Her abductors are demanding N5 million for her release, our correspondent reports.
Her husband, Prof Martins Fabunmi, who was also kidnapped, was shot and released.
Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Ibadan (UI), Dr Deji Omole, has called on the Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase to take actions towards the rescue of Fabunmi, who works at the Kenneth Dike Library in the university.
Omole was quoted as saying, “Where will ordinary Nigerians pass that they will be safe?
“Our roads are death traps and since we cannot afford plane tickets, we endure the hardship only for us to be kidnapped again. This is evil and must be stopped.
“The Inspector General of Police needs to track down kidnappers in Ondo State and other adjoining states.
“President Muhammadu Buhari should order security agencies to ensure Dr Fabunmi’s release within 24 hours.
“If ‘big men’ or their children are kidnapped, all the newspapers will be awash with the report but when the ‘poor man’ is kidnapped, he becomes another victim.
“The Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazzau, should step up his act and check this insecurity.
“The Federal Government must not force Nigerians to rise in self defence, if their security cannot be guaranteed by the state.

Varsity Management To Stop Male And Female Students From Living Together

EKSUThe Management at the Ekiti State University (EKSU) has promised to build more hostels to curb the cohabitation of male and female undergraduates otherwise known as “campus couple” syndrome.

The Vice Chancellor of EKSU, Prof. Samuel Bandele, expressed that his intention is to make the institution a fully residential one, adding that provision of more hostels for students would be vigorously pursued.

Owing to very limited hostel accommodation on the campus, many EKSU students live in nearby Iworoko community as live-in lovers.

Bandele said: “We are going to build more hostels to house our students on the campus to make them concentrate on their primary assignment as students and this will help us reduce a situation on which they live together as if they are married.

“A situation in which a male student and a female student live together under the same roof and the lady will be cooking and doing other home chores while the male will be providing the money and they will be doing what husbands and wives do together and their parents and guardians are not aware of this.

“So, we hope to provide more hostels to bring them to the campus and concentrate more on their academic activities and not to waste their time on living as couples outside the campus.”

Prof. Bandele also vowed to punish any lecturer caught in the web of sexual harassment of female undergraduates.

See The Alleged Reason Many JAMB Candidates Failed 2016 UTME

The president of Association of Tutorial School Operators, Mr Shodunke Oludotun has stated that the reason many candidates failed the 2016 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) was due to the fact that the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) used the wrong software to mark the exam.
According to him, JAMB used the software for 2015 exam to grade the students in 2016.
Mr Shodunke who equally called for the resignation of the JAMB Boss, Professor Dibu Ojerinde stated that there is evidence that virtually all the results of candidates they have collected bear 2015/2016 and not 2016/2017 which it was suppose to be.
He stressed that from their findings, it was revealed that the software of 2015/2016 interfered with the 2016/2017, which led to the massive failure of the students.
He said they were not against the use of the Computer Based Test (CBT) but said it was full of irregularities which led to the mass failure of candidates.

UNIUYO Prof And 44 Others Arrested For Violating AKS Sanitation Law

A Professor of the University of Uyo (UNIUYO) and 44 others were arrested and prosecuted on Saturday by the Akwa Ibom State Government for contravening the state’s monthly sanitation.
The sanitation holds every last Saturday of the month between 7am and 10am.
The clean-up, which started last year by the Udom Emmanuel administration, was the initiative of the Commissioner for Environment, Dr Iniobong Essien.
It is aimed at ensuring a clean environment through hygienic practices among residents.
The 45 defaulters, who were picked up by sanitation monitoring teams within Uyo, the capital city, were charged at the Sanitation Court, chaired by Rebecca Akpan, with committing an offence under Section 4 (m), which is punishable under Section 38 of Akwa Ibom State Public Health Law, Cap 103, Volume 5 of 2000.
The woman professor, whose name was not given to the media, was discharged and acquitted on self-recognisance.
This followed her appeal to the mobile court that she was on her way to clean up her church after completing the sanitation at home.
A few others, who were said to be students, were pardoned after convincing the court that they were on transit through the state and were not aware of the sanitation.
Those who pleaded guilty were asked to pay a fine of N3,000 each. But about 20 others, who pleaded not guilty, were remanded in prison custody.
They would be arraigned tomorrow by the government.
A dry cleaner, Mr Aniebiet Michael, who was arrested on Oron Road at 8 am, said: “I came from church in the morning for the sanitation at my shop, off Oron Road, when I was arrested by the task force and brought to the Sanitation Court. I pleaded guilty when I saw the seriousness, and the magistrate fined me N3,000.
“I did not have the money; so, I called my brother, who paid before the court closed at 2 pm.
“Those who could not pay or were defiant, and pleaded not guilty – about 20 of them – were conveyed in a long bus to a prison.
‘’There they would stay till Tuesday, to either pay the fine – for those who were fined – or have their case against the state started – for those who pleaded not guilty.”
Also, at the popular Uyo market, Dr Essien warned the traders to keep their stalls and shops clean or face sanctions.
The commissioner advised them to get polythene bags to pack their waste and drop at designated points.
He reminded them that the Emmanuel administration was determined to ensure that Akwa Ibom regained its glory as the cleanest state and its residents the cleanest.

UNILAG Students Wins Court Case Against Institution Management

The Lagos Federal High Courthas ordered the University of Lagos (UNILAG) to reinstate its students into the College of Medicine after a previous directive by school management caused them to be disqualified from their chosen course of study.
It was reported that UNILAG has been ordered to maintain the status quo before the dispute pending the resolution of the matter.
The students, who appeared in court, were very glad with this ruling.
For the students, as you can see, today is a happy day for them, we believe tomorrow will be better. We thank the court,” said Jiti Ogunye, counsel to the students.
We came to this court by way of judicial review, motion ex-parte, to seek leave and to ask the court to permit the leave to operate as a stay of all actions of the respondents against the students, essentially to enable them continue their academic programmes pending the resolution of this case.”
The undergraduates from the Faculty of Medicine reportedly sued the varsity after the management arbitrarily reviewed, upwards, the academic requirements into the College of Medicine.
The university had blocked some of its 2014/2015 medical ‎students from proceeding to the College of Medicine after introducing new academic qualifications in the middle of the school’s academic calendar.
The new rules saw the school placing the students into departments other than the one they studied in during their first year.
For instance, a student who was admitted to study Nursing saw herself reposted to Radiography, while another who was in Medicine and Surgery was moved to Fisheries.

JAMB Probes 15 Staff For Allegedly Compromising In Some UTME Centres

The Registrar/Chief Executive of Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, Prof. Dibu, Ojerinde, has said 15 employees of the agency are currently under investigation for allegedly compromising standard in the accreditation of examination centres that defrauded JAMB on the availability of adequate infrastructure.
Ojerinde said this during the visit of the House of Representatives Committee to the JAMB head office in Abuja on Wednesday.
The alleged compromise, Ojerinde said, led to technical problems encountered during the conduct of the 2016 UTME.
“A committee has been set up to investigate the role of some of our staff, about 15 of them, who conducted accreditation for some centers and if they are found guilty, they risk jail terms,” he said.
Also, the House of Representatives’ members made a U-turn and certified the computer-based test for the conduct of Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination into tertiary institutions across the country.
The decision came barely one week after it said that the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board should revert to the paper-pencil test in the conduct of UTME.
The Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education, Mr. Zakari Mohammed, stated this during a fact-finding mission to JAMB Headquarters, where they also supervised the rescheduled examinations in Abuja.
The JAMB employees under probe were said to have refused to conduct proper due diligence about the centres – a development that was responsible for complaints from the centres, including light and computer failure.
According to Mohammed, Nigeria cannot afford to return to PPT. He said that contrary to insinuations, the House of Representative never took a position on the CBT.
He said, “Basically, we need to be educated more. We are in support of the CBT and we cannot go back to paper-pencil; we must be in tandem with the world in the conduct of our examinations.
“The House (of Representatives) did not take any position on CBT, but there were fractions on the floor as to the adoption of both methods and I believe it is the reason why the House Committee on Basic Education was mandated to investigate. Nigeria cannot afford to maintain double standard as we know other African countries such as Uganda have been to our country to replicate our system such as the CBT.”
The PUNCH reported that Ojerinde had earlier promised that candidates who missed the 2016 UTME due to their relocation would be given equal opportunity to take the rescheduled examination on Wednesday.

NUC Announces That Only 400,000 UTME Candidates Will Be Admitted Into Nigerian Universities

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has announced that only 400,000 out of the 1.5 million candidates that  sat for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination(UTME) yearly  gain admission to Nigerian Universities, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.
The NUC Executive Secretary, Prof. Julius Okojie,  said  this when  Edo State Governor  Adams Oshiomhole  visited the commission on Wednesday in Abuja.
Oshiomhole was at NUC to collect the Certificate of Recognition for the new Edo State University, Iyanmo.
Okojie said new universities were needed to boost access to higher education while making sure that quality was not compromised.
He said,  “I am always happy when a new university comes on board; what that means is that we are expanding and we are opening up access.
“We know the number of candidates  that sit for UTME organised by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board every year.
“However, out of the 1.5 million candidates who take  UTME every year, we are barely able to make provision for only about 400,000 students.
“The new university will, therefore, be accessible not only to candidates  from Edo State but those from Ondo State and other states.”
According to the executive secretary, the Edo State University,  has become the 41st state university and the 142nd university in Nigeria.
Oshiomhole said  for sound university education, there was a need to produce sound secondary school graduates who would be able to face the rigours of university education.
He said, “We have structures that are strong and well designed; we are building more faculties.
“We are building more standard  hostels; students will behave based on the influence of the environment.
“So, it is my hope that we will make the right level of investment and the university will charge fees that will enable it to access revenue for sustained development without depending much on the  state government.”

UTME 2016: 59,000 To Retake JAMB Examination

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Friday said the board would reschedule examination for candidates who missed the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination because of relocation of centres by the board.
The board said it relocated 59,000 candidates in 15 states because of problems in some of the centres.
It also said candidates who had system failure during the examination would retake it, if the board finds their complaint to be genuine.
The Registrar of the board, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, who said this at a press conference in Abuja, added that the new development does not affect candidates who missed the examination deliberately or failed in the examination.
Ojerinde said among the 1,546,633 candidates that sat for the 2016 UTME, 145,704 had issues of multiple results, which have been resolved by the board.
Prof. Ojerinde added that 23,577 candidates were absent on the day of the examination.
“We relocated candidates where the board had challenges. The board is looking at some of the issues raised during the examination, but most of the excuses raised by candidates are flimsy,” he said.
“We relocated about 59, 000 candidates due to the problems in various centres which vary from town to town. There are about 59,000 of them spread across 15 states of the federation.
“Those that were relocated never suffered any setback or inconvenience. For all these two sets of people, I want to apologise sincerely for what happened to them, but we are going to put on a redress for those whose relocation affected them in missing their examination.
“Let me use this opportunity to offer explanation on the issue of the much-publicized two results. The process of our marking involves transformation and other qualitative programming. In the process of these configurations, we had a little challenge which we quickly corrected and ensured that this never happened in subsequent results. This challenge was only associated with the candidates that sat for this examination on Saturday, 27, and some candidates of Monday, 29 February, 2016.”
Prof. Ojerinde said the board found out that some of the over 500 centres used for the CBT was compromised by the operators.
He said that one of its centres in Uromi, Edo State was invaded by mercenaries during the examination.
He blamed the education consultants for mobilizing candidates to protest against the conduct of the examination by the board, adding that the quality of the centres used for UTME would not be compromised.
He said: “In our quest to have adequate and effective centres for the exercise, we approved over 500 centres, but unfortunately, some of the centre operators were not sincere in proving us with the true position of their facilities.
“They hired equipment during the period of accreditation and other necessary apparatus and on the examination day, they were found wanting. This led to relocation or rescheduling of candidates from some of them to more suitable centres.”
Ojerinde said Nigeria was ready to take the CBT examination, adding that reverting to the PPT as directed by the House of Representatives would amount to lack of progress.
According to him, the CBT would be improved upon.
He said: “Even the physically challenged are taking the CBT examination. One of the blind candidates scored 286, so why should others complain?
“Going back to the Paper and Pencil Test will amount to taking one step forward and two steps backwards.”
